What does the SNR displayed at the top of the results page mean?

“SNR” stands for “Signal-to-Noise Ratio”, which indicates the quality and purity of the extracted Facial Blood-Flow data. The higher the number, the better the quality of your measurement.

SNR is expressed in logarithmic units of dB (decibels). Anura calculates the SNR by comparing the facial blood flow level (as a separated signal) against the background level (noise floor) and representing the quality as the log ratio of these two levels.

Why does my measurement get cancelled?

Measurements are cancelled when the video is unstable. This can be because of lighting or movement. To prevent this from happening, stabilize the phone by holding it steadily, adjust your lighting (to make sure light is not flickering, there are no shadows, etc.), and adjust your face angle (to make sure light is hitting your face evenly).

What are the lighting requirements for Anura?

Anura works best in good light conditions, where light is evenly distributed across the face without any shadows. If you have trouble achieving this indoors, please try to use a phone stand and selfie light. Try to avoid direct light to the face, backlight and uneven light distribution.

What are the position and angle requirements for Anura?

Just as when you’re at the doctor’s, please sit comfortably before using Anura. Hold the phone directly in front of you or use a phone a stand when measuring. Try to limit any movement during the measurement and keep your face within the white outline. Do not hold the phone from above or below during the measurement.

I found a problem with the app, how do I report it?

You can send an email to us at anura@nuralogix.ai. Please include screenshots if you have them and describe the issue with as much detail as possible. This will help us pinpoint the problem more effectively.

UNDERSTANDING THE RESULTS

What does Heart Rate mean on Anura?

A range of 60 to 100 beats per minute (bpm) is considered a normal range for an adult’s resting heart rate. Generally, a lower heart rate at rest implies more efficient heart function and better cardiovascular fitness.

What are the five stars on the measurement result?

Anura uses a 5-star rating system to let you know the quality of your measurement based on the lighting conditions that illuminate your face.

4 – 5 stars : Good lighting conditions. You have well-lit conditions and the light is spread evenly (i.e. no shadows) across your face.

2 – 3 stars : Adequate light conditions. The light on your face is sufficient enough (i.e. not too low) and spread evenly enough across your face.

1 star : Poor lighting conditions. The light on your face is too low and uneven or there was too much movement after the measurement started.

What does a low (or high) Heart Rate result from Anura™ mean?

The Anura™ heart rate result is calibrated to align with the medically indicated ranges for the human resting heart rate. The medically indicated range for a “normal” resting heart rate lies between 60 bpm and 100 bpm. When Anura™ measures a heart rate that falls lower than 60 bpm, the result will be indicated on the “below normal” range (Bradycardia). When Anura™ measures a heart rate that is above 100 bpm, the result will be indicated on the “above normal” range (Tachycardia).

What does a low (or high) Stress Index result from Anura™ mean?

Green region – A well below normal stress results in a very low Anura Stress Index (ASI) that is ideal for maintaining good mental and physical health.

  • An ASI reading this low suggests the possibility that at this moment, you have nothing to worry about in your life or are in a state of deep relaxation

  • However, you may also not be experiencing enough mental arousal to keep you alert in certain tasks. Minimum stress is useful while engaged with daily activities or chores

Light green region – Your below normal stress reading results in a lower Anura Stress Index (ASI) that is beneficial for long term psychological and physical health

  • Receiving ASI readings in this zone are most suitable for the home or leisure environments

  • The ability to activate this lower level of mental arousal may facilitate concentration in difficult or unfamiliar tasks

Yellow region – Currently, your normal stress results in a moderate Anura Stress Index (ASI) that is not considered harmful to your psychological and physical health

  • Most people work optimally having an ASI within this stress zone

  • However, if your stress remains within this zone under all situations, including moments of relaxation, then you may benefit from learning effective relaxation techniques

Pink region – Experiencing higher than normal stress resulting in a higher Anura Stress Index (ASI) that allows you to improve short term performance by boosting your motivation to do more difficult tasks, particularly those requiring stamina or persistence

  • During exposure to this level of stress, you may experience mental or physical strain

  • However, ASI readings in this zone should not be a constant part of your life. Otherwise, it may negatively affect your long term psychological and physical health outcomes

Red region – You are experiencing a significantly higher than normal stress indicated by a very high Anura Stress Index (ASI) meaning that you will likely encounter impaired performance on certain tasks due to higher than normal anxiety

  • You may feel unable to calm yourself. Stop what you are doing and take slow, deep breaths. You should also avoid drinking caffeinated beverages like coffee

  • Reducing the causes of your stress and engaging in calming activities may help restore your stress balance including practicing deep breathing, yoga, or meditation daily

  • Be aware that prolonged periods of time spent experiencing such elevated ASI readings have the potential to cause health complications

Note: Just as your resting heart rate can vary constantly it is also normal for stress levels to change constantly. This is because your heart rate variability (HRV) is also changing constantly. As a result, it is not unusual to experience variations in your Anura Stress Index results by as much as 1.0 when you take consecutive measurements.

My stress index is always in the yellow region, should I be worried?

Don’t worry too much. The value of psychological stress in the yellow range indicates that you have normal psychological stress and your physical and mental health is stable. Most people in this interval will show the best working condition. When in non life-threatening situations, stress can motivate people in certain situations, such as when they need to take a test or interview for a new job.

THE UNDERLYING SCIENCE

What is the accuracy of Anura's Heart Rate measurement?

The Anura™ heart-rate measurements are accurate to within +/- 1 bpm when compared against electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements.

For evidence-based research, please read our publication on Transdermal optical imaging revealed different spatiotemporal patterns of facial cardiovascular activities.

How does Anura™ measure and rate my stress level?
  • Heart rate variability (HRV) is the observation of your sympathetic/autonomic nervous system. HRV has been a reliable indicator to measure stress. Existing methods for assessing HRV are ECG or PPG. Using TOI, we can measure HRV contactless-ly and non-invasively.

We began by taking continuous heart rate measurements of a large sample using traditional, contact-based methods (e.g. EKG). We then used this data to generate models of stress to derive a ground truth, then compared it with TOI signal results.

We then converted these values into a stress index with 5 levels, where 1 is the lowest and 4.9 is the highest. The difference between each level represents one standard deviation.

If you’re interested in learning more, you can read our research publication Transdermal Optical Imaging reveal basal stress via heart rate variability analysis: A novel methodology comparable to electrocardiography.

How is Anura able to measure blood pressure?
  • We first used the traditional contact method to measure blood pressure of a large sample, which includes medical professionals, cuff, additional pump, stethoscope and sphygmomanometer. Then we use these data to generate a blood pressure model, to produce a ground truth.

At the same time, we use our Transdermal Optical Imaging (TOI ™) technique to obtain facial blood flow information and send it securely to the cloud, which is processed by our Affective AI engine Deepaffex ™, which uses advanced signal processing and deep learning artificial intelligence model for calculating blood pressure.

Then we used the data and compared it with the ground truth, and found that the results generated by Deepaffex ™ were relatively accurate.

If you are interested in further study of this study, please read our research paper published in the Journal of Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging of the American Heart Association, titled “Smartphone-Based Blood Pressure Measurement Using Transdermal Optical Imaging Technology“.

Why do my Anura results greatly differ every time?

Anura results may differ since your body is constantly changing. There are many contributing factors to influence your results such as: if you are sitting vs standing, your posture, lighting and the light direction, the distance of your face from the camera, your face angle, Internet connection and beverage and/or food intake, etc.

Has your product been certified by an authoritative organization?

We have a patent in Heart Rate tracking and Blood Pressure determination.

06/11/2018 | System and Method for Camera-Based Heartrate Tracking | Patent No. US 10,117,588 B2

13/08/2019 | System and Method for Contactless Blood Pressure Determination | Patent No. US 10,376,192 B2

We have research publications as well; our papers are published on international journals, so far we’ve validated TOI for Heart Rate, stress measurement, and blood pressure.

Anura also received coverage from international media outlets like Bloomberg, Forbes, New York Post, DailyMail UK, The Globe and Mail and many more. See the full list here.

You mentioned a lot about "Affective AI", what is the specific direction of your products for "affects"?

In most cases, people do not visibly show their emotions on their faces, this makes it hard for other people to detect their emotions. TOI™ can extract the inner emotional experience of a person by analyzing their physiology. We have done research and built a model to detect emotions through a person’s physiology.

Therefore, with our technology, one-day robots will be able to detect human “real” feelings, detect stress, and send out anxiety alerts. This will allow Anura to gradually release the functions related to mental health, making it easier for everyone to not only take care about themselves, but also the physical and mental health of the people around them
